Talking about responsible breeding is very easy.
You can write about love for the breed, responsibility, carefully planned litters and a dream of raising the healthiest possible dogs. All of it is lovely.
But health testing is one of those areas where fine words can be checked fairly easily.
And we will say straight away something that is not very convenient for marketing: no responsible breeder can promise that their puppy will be completely healthy for life.
Biology offers no such guarantees.
We can reduce risk. We can gather information. We can decline a pairing if we do not like what we find. We can study pedigrees and genetic results. But we cannot sign a contract with nature.
And if someone claims they can do it, it is worth asking more questions.
This does not, of course, mean testing is pointless. Quite the opposite. Responsible breeding means precisely that we do not leave to chance what we can check today.

There is no single magic test
For Australian Shepherds there is no single magic test that stamps a dog “HEALTHY”. Different risks call for different information.
Hip and elbow scoring helps assess the joints. Eye screening allows certain eye problems to be looked for. DNA tests can identify specific genetic variants, including some linked to particular inherited conditions or drug sensitivity.
And these things do not replace one another.
“DNA tested” says nothing about hip status. Excellent hip results answer no genetic questions. And an Instagram photograph, however lovely, sadly answers none of them.
So when talking to a breeder it is worth asking not “were the parents tested?” but something more specific. What was tested? When? By what method? What was the result?
A good breeder should not fear these questions. More than that — they should be able to explain the answer to someone seeing that alphabet soup for the first time.
Why being a “carrier” is not a diagnosis

Because sometimes a genetic report sounds far worse at first than it actually is.
For example, the word “carrier” naturally sounds like a problem. Yet for some recessively inherited conditions a dog with one copy of the variant can be entirely healthy himself.
The important question is then not “why is this dog being bred at all?”, but “who is he paired with and what is the risk to the offspring?”
Automatically excluding every carrier of any variant from breeding would not necessarily be wise either. That is a very quick way to reduce a breed’s genetic diversity and create new problems while trying to solve one old one.
And here lies the difference between having a list of tests and having a breeding plan.
Even a very impressive table of test results does not tell you everything. It does not say how long close relatives lived. What problems recurred in the line. What the temperament was like. How earlier litters’ health turned out. What a particular combination of two dogs might bring to the next generation.
So sometimes the most responsible decision is to give up a pairing that looked very tempting on paper.

Both dogs may be beautiful. Both may be titled. Puppy reservations might fill in an instant. But breeding is not “put two good dogs together and get even better ones”.
A great deal of the work happens where the puppy’s future owner will never see it.
Ask. That is not a lack of trust
That is exactly why health tests are not medals on our website. They are information for decisions.
And so we always tell future owners: ask.
Asking about a test is not distrust of the breeder. A normal breeder should not start sweating over it.
On the contrary — if you are going to talk to someone about a dog who may live in your family for the next twelve or fourteen years, awkward questions are exactly where they belong.
We cannot promise a life without risk. But we can show you what we did to keep that risk as small as possible.
