<\/figure>\nSocialisation often means watching<\/h2>\n
A puppy does not have to greet every person and dog he meets. A future calm city dog needs to be able to see them and walk on.<\/p>\n
Sit at a distance from the cycle path that still lets the puppy sniff, eat and turn to look at you. Let him watch children through the playground fence rather than taking him straight into the middle of them. Play a new sound quietly enough that it is noticeable but not overwhelming.<\/p>\n
Distance is not avoidance. It is the volume dial you use to control how hard the task is.<\/p>\n
The puppy must be free to walk away<\/h2>\n
A good meeting with a person should not begin with them reaching a hand towards the dog\u2019s head. Ask your visitor to turn side-on, not to call insistently, and to let the puppy come over himself. A treat can be tossed on the ground, but do not lure him so close that, having taken it, the puppy suddenly feels trapped.<\/p>\n
If the puppy comes over, that is not yet consent to a long stroke. Touch briefly, stop and see whether he comes back. If he moves away, turns aside, licks his lips, freezes or crouches, give him space.<\/p>\n
Courage is not grown by removing the option to retreat. It grows as the puppy learns that he can explore and that his signals will be heard.<\/p>\n
The Australian Shepherd notices more than we sometimes wish<\/h2>\n
Aussies are often sensitive to movement, to changes in their surroundings and to human emotions. One puppy quickly takes an interest in a skateboard, another watches a wheelie bin moving in the distance for a long time. Both puppies\u2019 reactions can be entirely normal.<\/p>\n
Do not rush a more sensitive puppy simply because his littermate has already gone over. But nor should you comfort him as though the world really were dangerous. Stop calmly, create distance, let him watch and move away before he is worn out.<\/p>\n
What matters is not only the moment beside the trigger, but the recovery. Does the puppy start sniffing again after an unexpected sound? Does he take food? Can he fall asleep a few minutes later? The ability to return to normal often says more than whether he flinched in the first place.<\/p>\n
One good experience is worth more than five that are too hard<\/h2>\n
A new floor surface, the sound of a lift and an unfamiliar person can be three separate tasks at once. Add a car journey and a dog who wants to play, and we can no longer tell what the puppy found hard.<\/p>\n
